Un Flic

Jean-Pierre Melville 1972

un flicUN FLIC means “a cop” not “a flick,” though it would make more sense if it were the latter.  We’re supposed to believe that Alain Delon is a police superintendent who with one slap can instill fear in the hearts of hardened criminals.  This in addition to the model helicopter and train shots which even in 1972 I can’t believe Melville got away with.  But don’t get me wrong – the movie has it’s moments – I liked Delon most in his scenes with the cross-dressing informant. And as in LE CERCLE ROUGE, Melville’s better known heist film, the crime scenes are quiet, patient, maddeningly methodical, and super stylish.

Lina Wertmuller 1974

Much better than CASTAWAY.  The end is right but it stings.

Paul Schrader 1979

George C. Scott plays a desperate man trying to find his runaway daughter by posing as a porn producer in Hollywood’s 1970’s underbelly. This was back when porn was still shot on film and the only way to see it was to go to the theater. It’s an interesting scary vision of the Sunset Strip, and you never forget who George C. Scott is or what he’s after.

John Cassavetes 1971

One of my favorite Cassavetes films. Gena Rowlands and Sam Cassell as the title characters. Great play between them, between men and women, between older people and younger people, between love and commitment, between New York and Los Angeles. The scene where the mothers meet could have been written by Woody Allen.

Andrey Tarkovskiy 1975

The light in the first scene in this film went to the quick. At times the feeling wore off and I became completely lost, but there were always things in the film that touched my subconscious.

Hal Ashby 1975

Produced and co-written by Warren Beatty, this one is worth watching just to get into his head a little.

Robert Altman 1972

I had been on a major hot streak of seeing awesome movies that I loved, when MADELEINE slowed me down and IMAGES stopped me dead in my tracks.  But I ain’t mad at you, Robert Altman – you were one of my favorite all time directors and you’re entitled to go off the deep end from time to time.  IMAGES is about a woman on the verge of a schizophrenic breakdown; it employs several filmmaking techniques to explore the idea of conflicting realities and the onset of madness. The ideas are all good, but the whole thing didn’t really come together for me, mainly because I didn’t connect to any of the characters – least of all to Cathryn the heroine of the story.
