Stephen Hopkins 2004

Filmic flourishes abound as Geoffery Rush identifies with Peter Sellers identifying with Chance the Gardener from Jerzy Kosinski’s book, BEING THERE.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Tomas Alfredson 2011

A good looking Cold War British spy thriller (so it has a lot going for it) but the critics who loved it for being so sharp either are  much smarter than me or have read the book.  I wasn’t sure WTF was going on.

The Company

Robert Altman 2003

If a ballet company was a ball you could pick up, take a closer look at, play with, and then put down, the ball would be this movie.  The dance performances themselves are spectacular.

Danny Boyle 2010

The music, the editing, the scenery, and the Franco all come together in this popcorn flick. It’s also the first Danny Boyle film I’ve liked since TRAINSPOTTING.

Jody Hill 2009

Some people swear by this movie but I didn’t feel it. Except for Anna Faris – she delivers one of the best lines of the decade.

Infiltration (Hitganvut Yehidim)

Dover Koshashvili

Lots of mustaches in this Altman-esque study of an Israeli rear-echelon military base, circa 1950s.  Standout performance by Michael Aloni.

Nicolas Winding Refn

Ignore the haters – this is awesome. The colors, the music, the violence, LA.  Low-fat.

Enter the Void

Gaspar Noe 2009

The Tibetan Book of the Dead, on screen, via DMT. The descent down the staircase early in the film hooked me, and even if the film and its roving eye dragged on at times, it keeps its own rhythm and delivers a unique experience.
