Marco Ferreri 1967

Starts out good and then gets better and better, until the end, which is amazing.

Michael Haneke 2005

Suspenseful art film. High on intensity, low on satisfaction.

Aaron Katz 2007

Low impact story about a girl who comes to Brooklyn and spends a few uneventful days with an almost-man she met on the subway. A few good nuanced moments and the actress has something, but overall underwhelming.

The Spanish Prisoner

David Mamet 1997

Nothing pretty about this dated little thriller, but there’s something tongue and cheek about it that saves it from itself.

New York I Love You

Various Directors / Produced by Emmanuel Benbihy 2009

Nowhere near as good as PARIS JE T’AIME. The stories shouldn’t have been connected – it ain’t SHORT CUTS. Standout performance by – I shit you not – Shia Labeouf. He held his own with Julie Christie.

Surfwise

Doug Pray 2007

Documentary about a Doc Paskowitz, a doctor who took his wife and nine kids completely off the grid, and how this experience (living in a camper all together, surfing every day, receiving no education whatsoever) affected each of the kids. Ably made by the same guy who did, among other things, SCRATCH.

The Social Network

David Fincher 2010

I liked it but I felt cheap afterwards. A good vehicle for the screenwriter Aaron Sorkin – his dialogue works best when the characters are supposed to be smart. The twins, played by Armie Hammer, might have been the best thing about the movie, other than the regatta scene, which although not that important to the story, was masterful.

The Truman Show

Peter Weir 1998

Jim Carrey is very good in this very good movie. The 90’s were awesome for movies. Here are jut a few of the other movies that were released in the year 1998 alone: RUSHMORE, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, HURLYBURLY, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, THE ZERO EFFECT, BUFFALO 66, CELEBRITY, RONIN, ENEMY OF THE STATE, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, HALF BAKED, DIRTY WORK, RUN LOLA RUN, PI, SAFE MEN, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, THE WEDDING SINGER, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. I mean, holy shit things have really gone downhill since then.

Francis Ford Coppola 2009

How Coppola is capable of making a sleeper is beyond me, but mark my words: this film will be appreciated yet. Makes you want to go to Buenos Aires toot sweet.
