Hirokazu Koreeda 2009

This film was recommended to me by the Third Ear shift manager after I complained that LARS AND THE REAL GIRL had no balls. This one definitely has balls.  Great for, among other things, staying true to its protagonist and premise – a sex doll come to life.

Avi Mograbi 2008

Documentary about an Israeli man in his late twenties (and his girlfriend) trying to come to terms with his participation in a revenge ambush on Palestinian policemen during the second intifada. Interesting use of compositing to obscure/collectivize the protagonist’s identity. I understood the need for interludes but not so much the need for Mr. Mograbi to sing.

Carl-Gustav Nykvist 2000

Illuminating documentary about the Swedish cinematographer Sven Nyvist (made by his son), pictured here with Bergman.

Wim Wenders 1997

I find it hard to say anything about this film, which I’m not sure I totally understood.  I’m glad I’d seen some of Wenders’ other movies before I saw this one; otherwise I would have turned it off and missed the opportunity to see Bill Pullman living with a Mexican family in Los Angeles.

Fatih Akin 2010

From the writer/director of HEAD ON. Not funny – plays for hammy laughs that don’t come.  Some sexy moments, but ultimately disappointing.
