Julian Schnabel 1996

If you haven’t seen this in a while, you should see it again. It aged well. Did you forget that Benicio Del Toro is in it? I love his directions on how to become famous (Basquiat follows them to a T). David Bowie does a great Andy Warhol, better than anyone could have done, including Mr. Warhol himself. The art is beautiful (Schnabel did all the reproductions) and there are little moments of genius in the filmmaking, such as the surfers in the sky above the buildings in New York. Schnabel’s depiction of himself (played by Gary Oldman) is a little self serving, but who knows, maybe that’s how it really was – one painter dancing with his daughter while the other pees in the stairwell.

Terry Gilliam 2009

Imagine being cornered by a drunk Terry Gilliam at a party and having him tell you everything he is thinking. That’s pretty much what this film felt like.
