Fucky Film Review!

A Woman Under the Influence

John Cassavetes 1974

Gena Rowlands is so good in this that even if you don’t like the movie, which you might not, you will still be glad you saw it. But it’s not just her – it’s the character, written and directed by John Cassavetes, and also the support she gets from Peter Falk, whose performance is calibrated to compliment rather than overshadow hers, which he could easily have ruined the movie by doing. The film approaches its subject matter – mental illness and how families cope – with rare humanity, and without a single false note.
