American Gangster

Posted by Web Manager on July 3, 2009

(Sir) Ridley Scott 2007

After Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson died, his body guard/personal assistant Frank Lucas went to Bangkok, bought hundreds of kilos of heroin directly from Golden Triangle poppy farms during the Vietnam War, sent the dope back to the U.S. on army transport planes, and took over New York City’s heroin trade overnight.  Richie Roberts, a New Jersey detective who once found a million dollars of unmarked bills and turned it over to the authorities, arrested Lucas, and, having taken the bar exam in the meantime, prosecuted Lucas, put him in jail, and then later became his defense attorney. Sir Scott serves up this true story on a sterling silver platter.  Nothing too fancy — it just steamrolls in on the massive scale of its production and Josh Brolin’s mustache.
