Fucky Film Review!

Surrogate

I didn’t know anything about this film before I went to go see it at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque other than that people were talking about it. I actually thought they were talking about SURROGATES, the new Bruce Willis movie, which I thought was kind strange because I’d seen the preview and it really didn’t look like a cinematheque kind of film. Then I thought maybe the Bruce Willis SURROGATES is ironic satire, like STARSHIP TROOPERS. Come to think if it, the first time I saw STARSHIP TROOPERS was at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. The second time was a few months later, in Prague, but in a multiplex, not a cinematheque. SURROGATE is a modest film about a guy with some deep-seeded sexual issues and the unorthodox therapy he receives from a surrogate sex partner as part of the psychological treatment for his condition.  The writing is sparse and full of dramatic space, and the actors are interesting to watch. A little too much shaky handheld camera, but otherwise a very solid and original flick by a first time filmmaker.
