Fucky Film Review!

The Syrian Bride

Eran Riklis 2004

This is a little movie about the wedding day of a Druze woman on the Israeli side of the border who has to give up her Israeli citizenship and will probably never be able to come visit her family again because her groom lives in Syria. Once she crosses that border, which as it turns out, isn’t so easy, there’s no coming back. She cries a lot. A fat Israeli wedding videographer keeps putting his foot in it and then gives some good advice about marriage, despite never having been married, apparently because he is so fat.  Thank god Hiam Abbas is in the film, as the bride’s pants-wearing older sister who fights for her right to go to Haifa to study social work. I love watching Hiam Abbas (THE VISITOR) but I want to see her in something more lighthearted –  her  characters are so tragic.  I want to see her just be sexy, or funny, or petty, disappointed, whatever, anything but that resigned heartbreaking sadness.
